Vascular Wellness And Vascular Age: Overview

  1. Arteries in the human body are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood and nutrients from the heart to all parts of the body, including the heart itself.
  2. The arterial wall consists of three layers: the intima (inner layer), media (muscular layer), and adventitia (outer layer).
  3. Atherosclerosis begins as an abnormal accumulation of cholesterol, fat, and inflammatory cells in the inner lining (intima) of the artery, forming fatty streaks that can progress to plaques. Over time, this process leads to thickening and stiffening of the arterial wall, impairing blood flow.
  4. Common Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CCIMT), measured by ultrasound in the carotid arteries of the neck, is a well-established and validated marker of atherosclerosis. It reflects the overall atherosclerotic burden in the vascular system.
  5. A highly sensitive ultrasound technique called auto-edge detection (echo-tracking) improves the accuracy and reliability of this measurement by using real-time radiofrequency signal processing.
  6. In both men and women, CCIMT increases progressively with age [Reference #1] . Therefore, a single absolute value is difficult to interpret in an individual.
To address this, two derived statistical measures are used:
    * CCIMT Z-score (comparison with age- and gender-matched population): [Reference #2]
    * Vascular age (age equivalent of arterial health)
These measures provide a more meaningful assessment of atherosclerotic burden and cardiovascular risk.
  7. A higher vascular age compared to chronological (calendar) age indicates accelerated arterial aging and increased risk of future cardiovascular events, often assessed over a 10-year period in standard risk models. [Reference #3] This approach shifts the focus from “Do I have disease?” to “How healthy are my arteries for my age and gender?”
  8. The goal of vascular wellness is simple: Do not let your arteries age faster than you.
  9. Our approach combines advanced ultrasound imaging with statistical interpretation (Z-score and vascular age) to identify early, “silent” atherosclerosis and enable timely preventive strategies to reduce future cardiovascular risk.
  10. Healthy arteries can be maintained through appropriate lifestyle measures, including smoking cessation, a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and optimal control of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and abnormal cholesterol levels.
